Dwayne Sackey Demonstration Day | August 16

We are thrilled to host Dwayne Sackey as a guest artist and for a day full of demonstrations.

Sackey is currently a studio potter and educator in Portland, Oregon. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Oregon College of Art and Craft in 2019, was a recipient of the Studio Potter grant for apprenticeship alongside his mentor Chris Baskin and has published multiple articles in Pottery Making Illustrated.

During the day long demo, Dwayne will give an overview of his process, while demonstrating his signature faceted cups and what goes into making comfortable handles.


Schedule:

Saturday, August 16,

  • 10:00 am - noon: Demonstrations

    • Overview of tools, clay, techniques and end goals.

    • Demonstration of throwing and faceting technique, emphasizing key components of the throwing and faceting process and aiming to eliminate variables.

    • Talk about torching pots to expedite the drying process.

    • Throwing teacups off the hump.

    • Throwing mug forms that don't need to be trimmed.

    • Explanation of the claw and its effectiveness for these three different forms.

  • noon - 1:30pm: Break for lunch.

    • Bring your own lunch.

  • 1:30 - 4:30 pm: Demonstrations

    • Trimming techniques for both the inside and outside of faceted forms and tea cups.

    • Finishing bottoms of cups without trimming

    • Demonstration of pulling handles directly off the pot for those interested in refining their handle-making technique

This demonstration day is in conjunction with Dwayne’s soda firing workshop. By registering for the soda firing workshop, you also receive a discounted demonstration day rate. Registering for this demonstration does not allow you into the soda firing workshop.
