Hands on Tea Bowl Workshop with Scott Parady & Jennifer Griffith-Delgado | September 12 & 13

$265.00

This weekend workshop offers an immersive, hands-on exploration of Japanese tea bowls and culture. Moving between making, discussion, and tea sessions, participants will engage both the physical and experiential aspects of tea ware. Through guided demonstrations and open studio time led by CMAEP founder, Scott Parady, the group will explore approaches to forming teabowls, alongside conversations around use, gesture, and intention. Tea will be prepared and served throughout the weekend by Jennifer Griffith-Delgado, a Japanese tea practitioner, creating space to experience the vessels in use and to deepen an understanding of their role within the tea tradition.

The workshop balances instruction through demonstration with time for personal exploration. Participants will learn Scott’s tea bowl handbuilding techniques such as carving from solid forms and pinching on the banding wheel. Participants are encouraged to bring their own tea ware for an informal show-and-tell, fostering dialogue and shared learning within the group. The weekend concludes with a group reflection, offering an opportunity to consider the relationship between making, material, and the lived experience of tea.

The workshop will include five pounds of high firing clay - more can be purchased if needed. Participants are also welcome to bring their own clay if they have a specific clay that they would like to use. There will be a small assortment of shared hand clay tools, however participants are encouraged to bring their own tools as well.

Scott Parady is the founder and director of Cobb Mountain Art and Ecology Project, developed on his family’s 80-acre property where they have lived since 2003. He has worked as a ceramic artist for over 30 years and has taught at California State University-Sacramento since 2003. His teaware, including teabowls held in museum and private collections, reflects both decades of personal practice and training with makers connected to Japanese traditions, as well as study through programs at Sac State and the Urasenke Foundation.

Jennifer Griffith-Delgado became passionate about Japanese tea after she rediscovered sencha and developed a deeper appreciation of matcha on a walking tour of Uji. Since then, she has earned a foundation and intermediate certificate through the Global Japanese Tea Association, helped tea companies promote their products in the US, and co-founded the San Francisco Tea Society. She is currently studying tea farming at Obubu Tea Farms in Wazuka, Japan.
